Wes Hagen Is The Winemaker And Brand Ambassador For J. Wilkes Wines In The Santa Maria Valley, California. In 2013, Michael Cervin (Wall Street Journal, Decanter) Rated Wes As One Of The 100 Most Influential Winemakers In The United States (#68).
Wes is considered one of the most influential winemakers by the Wall Street Journal, author of three AVAs, and professor of wine and food pairing.
Wes is an accomplished wine writer, researcher, and lecturer; He has written for the L.A Times Magazine, Sommelier Journal, Burgundy Report and has appeared and been featured / quoted numerous times in the Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, and Wine Enthusiast.
Wes researched, wrote and had approved the last three AVA’s in Santa Barbara County: Sta. Rita Hills, Happy Canyon and Ballard Canyon.
Wes taught the Food and Wine Pairing program at Allan Hancock College for four years and has lectured on the History of Wine and Santa Barbara Wine at Cornell University, Caltech and many, many other prestigious institutions. His most recent achievement is having been nominated for a TED-talk on the History of Wine.

2015 Pinot Blanc
Pure and focused with tangerine flesh, peach skin, subtle white flowers / citrus blossom, saline, chalk, and granite. Focused and nervey from the oldest Pinot Blanc vines (and a few Melon de Bourgogne) in California, with a touch more structure / acid / verve than previous vintages. Bright and dry with wonderful stone-fruit persistence, mouth-cleansing freshness. Fantastic either as a cocktail wine, Summer Sipper, wine for the lake or the ocean (boating) or with all the food.
Our Chardonnay has notes of savory apple and lime zest, browned butter and Brulee, clean ocean breeze, hints of tropical fruit (guava / pineapple), complex and surprisingly integrated for such a young Chardonnay. Apple créme Brulee, lime zest and citrus blossom, rich with a flavor akin to pears poached in butter. Firm acid, quite dry, but supported by a good dollop of fruity and oak - toasted richness. Slightly leaner style than 2013, but with enough malolactic and oak treatment to leave no doubt this is a crafty and deliciously balanced Chardonnay. Ready to drink now but will become a little more complex, mineral and nutty between 5 and 8 years from vintage date. Decanting/aerating suggested through 2019.
2015 Pinot Noir
This Pinot Noir has ripe red berry fruits, cherry pie, Kola nut, white pepper, clove and an intense earthy / spicy / savory / meaty complexity that reminds me of great, young Burgundy wine. Bright, fruity, balanced and quite complex for such a juicy youngster. Light, loamy tannins add structure to the light acidity, giving a palate-cleansing character that will improve almost any food that can be put on a plate or in a bowl.
2015 Cabernet Sauvignon
Our dense & rich dark ruby Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of black fruits, toffee, & cedar. Fruity, juicy, and ripe on the attack - medium body plus with a rare combination of dense, delicious fruit notes, and also a sense of balance and elegance, some Paso - dust minerality and a long, bright, fruity finish. Paso Highlands Cabernet (85%) gives the wine breadth, currant / cassis notes, big flavor, and dense heartiness. Lagrein (15%) adds some grip and mild tannin as well as some complex mid-palate notes and a good, fruity / earthy finish.
